BIO

Andrea Frank was born and raised in Munich, Germany, and graduated with honors from the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, Germany. Supported by grants from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Rotary International Foundation, she moved to New York City, where she earned her MFA from Parsons The New School and later participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program.

Through an artist's lens, she explores the climate, biodiversity, social justice, and psychological impacts of our current way of life. In her studio practice, she explores ecological complexity and collective responsibility and psychology through photography and related media. She has developed the collaborative System Drawing format to explore emergent pathways toward regenerative culture across disciplines and holds related workshops locally and internationally. She embraces creative experimental collaboration as a tool for transformation and connection, integrating Indigenous perspectives, organizational innovation frameworks and embodied practices into formats of engagement, education and life. She currently engages in embodied research with Michael Asbill (under the name tree speed) as part of an artist residency at Mohonk Preserve and collaborates toward a regenerative culture on campus and beyond as a core member of Eddy at New Paltz, an evolving, open, trans-disciplinary, co-creative, and embodied learning lab.

Frank is the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, most recently from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY, Arts Mid Hudson, and the SUNY Network of Excellence. Solo exhibitions include UNF Gallery of Art in Jacksonville and 621 Gallery in Tallahassee, FL; Galleria Michela Rizzo in Venice, Italy; Carroll and Sons in Boston; Edward Thorp in NYC; and Kunsthalle Göppingen in Germany. She hosts experiential think tanks and System Drawing sessions internationally.

From 2003 -12 Frank served as a lecturer in Photography and Related Media at the MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. While at MIT, she also engaged in creative interdisciplinary research and studied System Dynamics to better understand the drivers underlying our current environmental and existential crisis, which became the foundation for her collaborative System Drawing format. She is an Associate Professor and head of the Photography Program at the State University of New York at New Paltz in the Hudson Valley, NY
